Windows Firewalls

The most important piece of computer security is a firewall. There are two main types of firewalls. Hardware based firewalls and software firewalls. I strongly suggest getting a Hardware firewall. Hardware firewalls are installed between you DSL/Cable modem and your computer and prevent other computers on the internet from being able to directly connect to your computer, while allowing you to freely access the internet. If you have a DSL/Cable internet connection and do not have a hardware firewall you computer is accessible to anyone in the world who is connected to the internet, even if you have a software firewall. If you have a software firewall and you computer is up to date with all Microsoft update your computer should be safe, but the amount of extra security a hardware firewall provides makes them a must-have in my book.

Software firewalls run on your computer. Windows XP has a built in firewall and you should always have it enabled. Older versions of Windows, such as Windows 2000, ME, 98 and 95 do not come with a built in firewall. The best software based firewall is ZoneAlarm. ZoneAlarm has a free version and there is a link to it below.

Hardware based firewalls typically are typically included in low cost routers and combo router/wireless access points. These are available from companies such as Linksys, Belkin, Netgear and Dlink. Prices range from about $30 to $100.
